Speaking in Tongues

1 Cor 13:1 « Quand je parlerais les langues des hommes et des anges, si je n’ai pas la charité, je suis un airain qui résonne, ou une cymbale qui retentit. »

God us gives both languages to speak:

(1)   Tongues of MEN (Men understand)

(2)    Tongues of ANGELS (Men DON’T understand)

Speaking in Tongues of Angels

1. Personal with God

1 Cor 14:2 « En effet, celui qui parle en langue ne parle pas aux hommes, mais à Dieu, car personne ne le comprend, et c’est en esprit qu’il dit des mystères… »

2. The faith of the believer is built up (Jude 20)

1 Cor 14:4 « Celui qui parle en langue s’édifie lui-même. »

Jude v20 « Mais vous, mes chers amis, bâtissez votre vie sur le fondement de votre foi très sainte. Priez par le Saint-Esprit. »

3. The believer prays at a higher level (from intellectual to spiritual). He allows the Spirit to take control, who prays for us and for others.

Romains 8:26-27 « De même aussi l’Esprit nous aide dans notre faiblesse, car nous ne savons pas ce qu’il nous convient de demander dans nos prières. Mais l’Esprit lui-même intercède par des soupirs inexprimables (Langue des anges) ; et celui qui sonde les cœurs connaît quelle est la pensée de l’Esprit, parce que c’est selon Dieu qu’il (St Esprit) intercède en faveur des saints.

4. It is a way to glorify God

Actes 10:44-45 « Comme Pierre prononçait encore ces mots, le Saint Esprit descendit sur tous ceux qui écoutaient la parole. Tous les fidèles circoncis qui étaient venus avec Pierre furent étonnés de ce que le don du Saint Esprit était aussi répandu sur les païens. Car ils les entendaient parler en langues et glorifier Dieu. »

5. Speaking in Tongues of Angels is for EVERY born again Christian.

The Christian becomes sensitive to the Holy Spirit, thus opening door for spiritual gifts.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthiens 12:4-11 « Il y a diversité de dons, mais le même Esprit ; diversité de ministères, mais le même Seigneur ; diversité d’opérations, mais le même Dieu qui opère tout en tous. Or, à chacun la manifestation de l’Esprit est donnée pour l’utilité commune. En effet, à l’un est donnée par l’Esprit une parole de sagesse; à un autre, une parole de connaissance, selon le même Esprit ;à un autre, la foi, par le même Esprit; à un autre, le don des guérisons, par le même Esprit; à un autre, le don d’opérer des miracles; à un autre, la prophétie; à un autre, le discernement des esprits; à un autre, la diversité des langues ; à un autre, l’interprétation des langues. Un seul et même Esprit opère toutes ces choses, les distribuant à chacun en particulier comme il veut. »

Fruit of the Holy Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23 « But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. »

Mismatch between Gifts and Fruit.

Gift of Speaking in different kinds of tongues

Spiritual gift to speak a language unknown to us but understood by other people (Acts 2:4-12 – Tongues of men).

This gift is commonly found with Christians who travel and preach the Gospel to people from different cultures and countries. This gift is activated inside them with a deep desire to start speaking in tongues to somebody or a group of people in their own native language.

Gift of Prophecy

Spiritual gift to speak forth a message or a revelation from God. Prophetic word can address individuals, the church, or a city.

-> Utilité Commune (common good).

1. Prophecy to instruct and to encourage

1 Cor 14:31 « For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. »

2. Prophecy to predict the future for guidance and taking action. The Holy Spirit guides.

Acts 11:27-30 « During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.) The disciples, as each one was able, decided (take action) to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea. This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. »

John Piper’s definition of the gift of prophecy:

NT gift of prophecy is a regulated message or report in human words usually made to the gathered believers based on a spontaneous, personal revelation from the Holy Spirit for the purpose of edification, encouragement, consolation, conviction or guidance but not necessarily free from a mixture of human error, and thus needing assessment on the basis of the apostolic (Biblical) teaching and mature spiritual wisdom.
