Evangelism: Apologetics II – Defending Christian Faith

> Responses and Criticisms to Evangelism

1. I am not interested in God and Jesus.
2. God does not exist.
3. I believe in science/knowledge, not in God.
4. Doing good in life is sufficient.
5. Christianity is not the only way to God.
6. Christianity restricts our freedom of life.
7. How can God allow evil and suffering?
8. Jesus is not God, just a man.
9. Christians are homophobic (against gay people).
10. God cannot be a Trinitarian God (in 3 persons), etc.

> Apologetics

Christian apologetics is the act of defending Christianity. This is important for two reasons:

• To aid our evangelism process by removing stumbling blocks that unbelievers have;
• To deepen the faith of believers in God.

Ravi Zacharias: “helping the thinker believe and helping the believer think.”

> Always be prepared to give an answer

1 Peter 3:15 : Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you.

(1) To give the reason for the hope that you have.

(2) But do this with gentleness and respect.

We should be gentle and respectful in communicating our faith and do not end up with disputes with a person with different viewpoints.

⇒ It is more important to win the person than to win the argument.

> Response to “I believe in Science, not in God”

1. Christians support Science and Knowledge. It brought immense amount of understanding such as:

• Physics: Creation of the universe from a Big Bang.
• Chemistry: Reactions among atoms.
• Biology: Map the genome of humans (DNA, genes).

2. Science attempts to explain about the universe and life. It focuses on HOW universe/life works. But it does not reveal WHY the universe/life came to exist and WHAT was before their existence.
3. The Bible focused on WHY the universe/life exists and for WHAT PURPOSE.
4. Science does not attempt to prove or disprove the existence of God.
5. Modern science started from Christian convictions that God’s creation is ordered, intelligible, and its investigation is part of what it means to love the Lord your God with all your mind (understanding).
6. Most historians of science see a causal link between the Christian Reformation in Europe in the 1500s and the birth of modern science in Europe in the 1600s.
7. The Reformers led people to question traditional views and make fresh enquiries of God’s word in the 1500s, and then of God’s world in the 1600s.

The pioneers of modern science were all theists, and the vast majority of them were Christians.

> Pioneer Scientists were Christians

• Francis Bacon (1561-1626), Anglican, father of modern science: “God has provided us with 2 books – the book of Nature and the Bible – and to be properly educated; one should study both”.
• Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), Lutheran: The chief aim of all investigations of the external world should be to discover the rational order which has been imposed on it by God, and which he revealed to us in the language of mathematics.

> 51% Scientists believe in God

Francis Collins, Anglican, a scientist and director of the National Institutes of Health: “God’s domain is in the spiritual world, a realm not possible to explore with the tools and language of science. It must be examined with the heart, the mind, and the soul.”

> The Bible teaches that God reveals Himself in two ways:

1. General Revelation

General Revelation is the evidence of God visible in the majesty of creation – from the human body and nature to the governing of the universe.

“the revelation of God to all people, at all times, and in all places that proves that God exists and that He is intelligent, powerful, and awesome.”

Romains 1 (BDS) : ¹⁹ En effet, ce qu’on peut connaître de Dieu est clair pour eux, Dieu lui-même le leur ayant fait connaître. ²⁰ Car, depuis la création du monde, les perfections invisibles de Dieu, sa puissance éternelle et sa divinité se voient dans ses œuvres quand on y réfléchit. Ils n’ont donc aucune excuse.

Psaumes 19:1 (LSG) : Les cieux racontent la gloire de Dieu, Et l’étendue manifeste l’œuvre de ses mains.

2. Special Revelation

Special revelation is how God has chosen to reveal Himself through miraculous means, such as physical appearances of God, dreams, visions, the written Word of God, and most importantly Jesus Christ.

2 Cor 12:2-4 (BDS) : ² Je connais un homme, qui appartient à Christ, et qui, il y a quatorze ans, a été enlevé jusqu’au troisième ciel – était-ce dans son corps, je ne sais, ou sans son corps, je ne sais, mais Dieu le sait. ³ Je sais seulement que cet homme – dans son corps ou hors de son corps, je ne sais, Dieu le sait – ⁴ a été enlevé au paradis et qu’il a entendu des paroles qu’on ne peut pas répéter parce qu’il n’est pas permis à un homme de les dire.

Hébreux 1:1-3 (BDS) : ¹ A bien des reprises et de bien des manières, Dieu a parlé autrefois à nos ancêtres par les prophètes. ² Et maintenant, dans ces jours qui sont les derniers, il nous a parlé par le Fils. Il a fait de lui l’héritier de toutes choses et c’est aussi par lui qu’il a créé l’univers. ³ Ce Fils est le rayonnement de la gloire de Dieu et l’expression parfaite de son être. Il soutient toutes choses par sa parole puissante et, après avoir accompli la purification des péchés, il s’est assis dans les cieux à la droite du Dieu majestueux.
