Prelude to revival

Romains 12:11 (LSG) ¹¹Ayez du zèle, et non de la paresse.

Lectures:

2 Rois 19: 29-31

²⁹ Que ceci soit un signe pour toi: On a mangé une année le produit du grain tombé, et une seconde année ce qui croît de soi-même; mais la troisième année, vous sèmerez, vous moissonnerez, vous planterez des vignes, et vous en mangerez le fruit. ³⁰ Ce qui aura été sauvé de la maison de Juda, ce qui sera resté poussera encore des racines par-dessous, et portera du fruit par-dessus. ³¹ Car de Jérusalem il sortira un reste, et de la montagne de Sion des réchappés. Voilà ce que fera le zèle de l’Éternel des armées.

Tite 2: 11-15

¹¹ Car la grâce de Dieu, source de salut pour tous les hommes, a été manifestée. ¹² Elle nous enseigne à renoncer à l’impiété et aux convoitises mondaines, et à vivre dans le siècle présent selon la sagesse, la justice et la piété, ¹³ en attendant la bienheureuse espérance, et la manifestation de la gloire du grand Dieu et de notre Sauveur Jésus Christ, ¹⁴ qui s’est donné lui-même pour nous, afin de nous racheter de toute iniquité, et de se faire un peuple qui lui appartienne, purifié par lui et zélé pour les bonnes oeuvres. ¹⁵ Dis ces choses, exhorte, et reprends, avec une pleine autorité. Que personne ne te méprise.

What is Zeal?

Zeal is a tireless devotion for a person, cause, or ideal and determination in its furtherance (till accomplishment)

Tireless = A lot of energy, effort, work

Tireless? Spiritually, emotionally and physically?

Devotion = Commitment

How to get commitment? Purpose and Fear of God

Someone who is zealous uses a lot of time, energy or money, in supporting someone or something that they believe in very strongly.

Synonyms: enthusiastic, passionate, burning

People can be zealous (energy, effort, work).

• At work, striving to succeed.
• At school, striving to get good results.
• The things we like, hobbies, sports teams, …

Think of this… We always have enough time, energy and money for those things about which we are zealous.

What are those things which you are zealous?

How about Zeal for God?

What do you think of using your time, energy, or money for God? Tireless devotion towards

Person – God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Cause – Sharing the Grace of God through Jesus Christ, leading to eternal and abundant life.

Ideal – Good works related to the 2 commandments of Jesus Christ, to love God and to love your neighbors as yourself.

and determination in its furtherance until accomplishment.

Where does Zeal for God come from?

Zeal comes out from the grace of God.

¹⁰ Ce que je suis à présent, c’est à la grâce de Dieu que je le dois, et cette grâce qu’il m’a témoignée n’a pas été inefficace. Loin de là, j’ai peiné à la tâche plus que tous les autres apôtres – non pas moi, certes, mais la grâce de Dieu qui est avec moi. 1 Corinthians 15:10 (BSD)

Grace didn’t make Paul lazy or passive. It made him work hard! (a lot of energy and time)

It is true that Jesus did his share for humanity so that they can receive peace and eternal life by grace. But it is a wrong to believe that our faith in Jesus Christ made us to do nothing or to seek comfort in material things.

Grace = Zealous for good works

Tite 2:11 ¹¹ En effet, la grâce de Dieu s’est révélée comme une source de salut pour tous les hommes. ¹² Elle nous (1) éduque et nous (2) amène à nous détourner de tout mépris de Dieu et à rejeter les passions des gens de ce monde. Ainsi nous pourrons mener, dans le temps présent, (3) une vie équilibrée, juste et empreinte de piété, ¹³ en attendant que se réalise notre bienheureuse (4) espérance : la révélation de la gloire de Jésus-Christ, notre grand Dieu et Sauveur. ¹⁴ Il s’est livré lui-même pour nous, afin de nous délivrer de toute désobéissance et de faire de nous, en nous purifiant ainsi, un peuple qui lui appartienne et qui mette toute son ardeur (zèle) à accomplir des œuvres bonnes.

Zeal accomplishes

2 Kings 19:31 (NIV) “For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord Almighty (Lord of hosts) will accomplish this”

Judah was near to destruction and defeat from Sennacherib, king of Assyria. God’s zeal determined to further His plan of salvation by saving a remnant from Jerusalem. Out of the remnant, Jesus would be born in Bethlehem, as prophesied by Micah (Micah 5:2).

Micah 5:2

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

Micah (742-700 BC) – prophet to the Southern Kingdom (Judah).

Isaiah (740-700 BC) – prophet to Northern Kingdom (Israel).

Isaiah 9:6-7

⁶ For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,  and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

⁷ Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

The Christmas prophecy was accomplished because of God’s zeal.

Zeal of Jesus

Jésus dans le Temple à douze ans (Luc 2:41-51)

… sa mère lui dit : Mon enfant, pourquoi nous as-tu fait cela ? Tu sais, ton père et moi, nous étions très inquiets et nous t’avons cherché partout.

⁴⁹ – Pourquoi m’avez-vous cherché ? leur répondit Jésus. Ne saviez-vous pas que je dois m’occuper des affaires de mon Père ?

The zeal of Jesus made him devoted to his earthly mission as from the age of 12 years old. His zeal brings him to accomplish his mission on the cross. What were his last words on the cross? John 19:28-30.

John 19:28-30

²⁸ Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” ²⁹ A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. ³⁰ When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

APPLICATION

• Do you wish to accomplish God’s purpose in your life? Yes! Then start with doing Good Works which please God.

• How to accomplish the Good works? Yes! Then, that takes zeal – a tireless devotion for a person, cause, or ideal and determination in its furtherance.

Passivity/Procrastination never accomplishes.
